'Out of the box' support for the remote will be included in kernel 2.6.24.A note about the IR receiver: The IR receiver is very 'fragile'. It may disappear if the i2c bus is probed or if you unplug it and plug it back in. The 'fix' is to completely cut off power to the system (just turning off OS is NOT enough), wait for 10 or 20 seconds, then power it up again.
