Here's the problem: My wife has a Macbook Pro (she needed a mac specifically for work). We want to play GTA Online together. We don't have the $$$ to buy a fast PC just to play games on. So I have been looking into ways to get GTA to run on her Mac.

To make matters worse we're down to about 25GB of internal storage on her Mac so Bootcamp isnt immediatly viable. (would could free up some space but using almost 1/2 her internal storage (250GB) on just windows/GTA (about 90GB total) is hard to justify.My current idea is to install windows and GTA V on an external SSD and then run it on her Mac over USB 3.0. Is this plausable? Will it be too slow to play at a decent resolution? Will it oveerheat? Should I just bite the bullet and start selling my body on the streets to get that second PC?

Earlier mbps would have a Thunderbolt 2, which is still twice as fast as usb3, but not as fast as T3.Usb3 will give you up to around 5gigbits/second, thunderbolt 2 will give you 20, thunderbolt 3 will give 40.

With Mac, you're paying for software, and I do love the OS. At the same time, it's nice to have a computer that's completely dedicated to the os.I ran a mac completely off an external for awhile and didn't like it.

I bought a pre-built with gtx960, i5 4460, 8gb ddr, 1tb for 600$, not including windows. Like honestly it runs great and it'll be much better than any mac.

Hi, I admit the reply being too late to your case, but in my eyes you have a few options, option one is using Bootcamp via an external SSD or hard drive, in order to do so, you can easily find a tutorial with 9 to 5 Mac and using that install the bootcamp on the external drive and then use windows as a second nature.Option two is using parallels, now parallels again you can find various tutorials as to how to use it, and where to download it. Being a little costly 80$ you get a full fledged virtual machine edition of Windows 10 (no need to activate windows if you want to just play games).Another option is GeForce Now, the program is in Beta and has free access in USA and Europe, this program allows you to stream games in their full resolutions, yes you can actually play them with no performance loss and no problems to your laptop at all. Its available for Mac and Windows alike but at the same time you should have a copy of the game you want on Steam or Origin or.Please do remember that although during bootcamp you will be able to play games, but at the same time, if you do, your PC might start heating up, you might need to use Mac Fan Control and also if possible at all get an EGPU box with a GPU installed.
